An Afrikaans Creative Cultural Day for Afrikaans Second Language Learners

A very popular activity for high schools (senior schools) is our Afrikaans cultural day. Usually, a school will send a particular grade in batches over a number of days.

On arrival, the learners are divided into a number of teams, which are then asked to compose a team song and choose a name with a team banner.

Creative Koeksisters!

The teams then compete with each other in a number of delightful activities including baking koeksisters (girls and (yes!) boys love this!), treasure hunt boeresport including toutrek (tug-of-war).

Naturally as much of the language as possible is spoken during the always remembering that these are occasions to celebrate the culture of the language rather than only opportunities to speak it. It is an opportunity to think creatively in a second language in an arts and craft setting.

Teams prepare for Boeresport by:

  • Choosing a team name – usually the Afrikaans name for an animal
  • Designing their team logo and printing it on a T-shirt
  • Making their team mascot, banner, flags and musical instruments to accompany their team song
  • Writing and composing their team song and slogan
  • Before the Boeresport, each team gets a chance to perform their songs and cheer while displaying and wearing their creative products
  • Make and plat their koeksisters in the traditional way, where after the make and design a "new" Koeksister and give it a special name
  • Take part in a treasure hunt involving Afrikaans proverbs which they resolve with clues - a team activity which gets them out of the studio at the end of the day
The Afrikaans Day is but one of our outings. See our page on school excursions for information on all our school camps
